Past continuous; when і while
was / were + -ing — дія, яка тривала в певний момент минулого. Це тло, а коротка подія на ньому — у Past simple.

The red kite was flying above the trees.Червоний повітряний змій літав над деревами.
Nick wasn't watching the kite at that moment.Нік у ту мить не стежив за змієм.
Where was it lying?Де він лежав?
Eva was holding the string when the wind hit the kite.
While they were drinking tea, the rain was hitting the windows.
When the phone rang, I answered it.
A little rain was already falling when she came through the gate.Уже падав невеликий дощ, коли вона зайшла у хвіртку.
While they were talking, the weather changed.Поки вони розмовляли, погода змінилася.
when буває й перед тривалою дією: When I was walking home, it started to rain.
When the phone rang, I was cooking. — я вже готувала, дзвінок перервав. When the phone rang, I answered it. — спершу дзвінок, потім відповідь.
-ing без was / were не працює. Дієслова стану (know, like, want) і тут без -ing.
